Men In Short Shorts: Cute, Not Cute?

Meet Charles Manning, Stylist. He says he recently started wearing really short shorts because it's too hot out. He also says people should wear what they wanna wear, and while I don't disagree with him there, I still think it would be a bit weird to see a man out and about in extra short shorts. What are your thoughts? Short shorts on a man - Cute or not cute? If the video above doesn't play [Click here to play the video]

There are shorts and then there are super short shorts and the latter sucks. Shorts are cool on guys as long as they are baggy and flattering. Anything else looks like a tragedy. Talking of tragic, what do you think of guys in skinny jeans? Everytime I see it I wanna cry because it looks so awful. In fact I think it should be made illegal.

Men in short shorts are fantastic, provided that their legs are shaved and tan.

Not cute!!But I do remember back in the day when Magic Johnson and all those basketball teams wore short shorts!!Well it didn't look bad then!!It looked good!!

NO WAY short shorts look HORRIBLE. And slim jeans on guys are not a good look either. It sends a red flag to me that they are GAY!

Nik said...

Yeah, unfortunately this look is either RETROsexual or just downright 'mo. My gaydar would be bleeping off the charts if I passed a MAN on the streets in short shorts like those. It is what it is.

not only short shorts but if my eyes aren't playing tricks on me it looks like he's carrying a man purse too. i would throw up if my husband ever thought this was a cool idea (and thankfully he never would!)

Amazing how women tend to mix gayness every time men try to break out of a mold.

Long baggy shorts are flattering? Why do women want to obliterate mens body and enhance theirs (i.e. high heels, push up bras, tight jeans).

A man with good legs should be able to show them off. makes it easier to visualize him naked.

This is ridiculous that men cannot be free to wear what they want when women can basically wear anything in the world.... If the man has nice shaved legs, like biker legs or runner legs, why not. It is time for men to request their fashion freedom! Women have such a double standard.... Funny the comments of my wife's friends to my wife who saw me in short shorts.... "Your husband has such nice legs!!!!!"

Anonymous said...

I do not view what he has on as true short shorts. They are very similar to what I wear during the tropical Florida summers.I fully agree with Jean.

*Snort* I think this is an american thing - i feel sorry for american men. They have to wear baggy clothes and can't show off their body. Sad.

Is he trying out to be be Lt Dangle's sidekick on RENO 911? lol, not cute, G-G-G-AY!!!

JEAN said...

Why would wearing short shorts make a man GAY? WHy because short shorts are for girls.... Wonder how women came up with those ideas. They were fine before. If this trend continues, soon men will have to wear an armor....

I know I am going to make some women unhappy, but my take is some guys look so great in short shorts than some women are just jealous....

all you people that say men shouldnt wear short shorts must have never seen a guy with nice runner or biker legs. i wear short shorts in the summer and get compliments everyday. plus its alot better than the shorts that shouldnt even be called such being that they are so low and ridiculous. i agree that alot of men shouldnt. but dont negate the possibility of men looking good you biggots.

I am 52, with a slender/average build, and slim legs. When I am in the privacy of my home I always wear short running shorts because I like to be comfortable. In the warm summer months I sometimes go to the local c-store, and I admit I am a little self-conscious what people may think. I don't like the style of shorts that most men wear, because they are baggy and they make my legs look skinnier, plus I don't feel as comfortable with shorts that are just above my knees. Because of my slender build, I really don't mind showing off my thighs. So, I figure if anyone wants to make their remarks when I wear short running shorts when I go out for an evening run or walk, it's my business. The heck what anybody thinks!

JaredH said...

i see no problem with shorts that are above the knee. actually, living in a country like australia (or any other warmer clime), i am incredibly grateful that fashion in shorts is now above the knee - i.e. much cooler! and i don’t understand why it is appropriate for women to wear shorts that reveal almost everything, but inapproproate for men to wear shorter shorts.

to be honest, all these long shorts below the knee are pretty hot and uncomfortable, so this is a welcome change in fashion!

granted, most aren’t really amenable to being dressed up as more formal wear, but as for casual, and smart casual in warmer climates, shorts above the knee are fine with me!

I agree with alot of what I'm hearing from other guys....there is such a double standard...I liked it better in the 80's when tennis shorts from Nike and Addidas were sold right in sport shops for guys...
I have shaved and tanned legs and I get alot of looks from women and men...most are on the page of thinking here comes a gay dude...
But the stupid shorts we are suppossed to wear these days are pure crap.....all baggy and to me that's what's gay...
If a guy has the legs and dresses that way, so what....I agree males need a revolution to get back to the 80's when it was acceptable for anyone to wear what they wanted....the NBA needs to bring back the shorts they had in the 80's and maybe society would get looser in their stupid, biggoted, double-standard,hypocritical style of not letting guys have a choice without the stigma which fashion wonks have imposed on us....
And that guy in the video probably does have better legs than some women, so maybe women are threatened and have convinced themselves guys in short=shorts are NOT cute....to bad for them...I NEVER want a girlfriend to treat me like that, otherwise it's over with...DEALBREAKER...

I remember when long shorts over the knee was something that we laughed at and thought looked really stupid. I hope long shorts go out of fashion and shorter shorts return. There is nothing wrong with them as long as they are designed nicely.

Anonymous said...

ah, sorry to say it, but short shorts ARE back! So all you haters better accept it, because thats whats hot in male fashion right now.

Anonymous said...

I agree with many of the other comments from guys (e.g. Simon). 20-30 years ago, shorter shorts on guys were the norm. Now that they're taboo (since the early 90s), I just don't wear shorts any more, even on a really hot day. What's the point? These long baggie things don't cool you down any.

I'm a 23 year old straight male. I love wearing short shorts (2" or less inseam). I have a bubble butt and tanned, smooth, and muscular legs, which I love showing off. I get compliments all the time from men and women. I have a girlfriend and she likes grabbing my butt when I wear these shorts.

Michal Augustyniak said...

Aren't women supposed to cover-up to show some humility? It's a friggin flesh-fest out there. Men have historically been the ones to run-around half-naked, until modernity hit and ruined it for all of us. Looks like American women can't bear the thought of men showing-off. Takes all of the attention and gawking away from them. Poor girls. Cover-up! Judging from at least half of the women's comments, I'd say women here are the biggest homofobes, they seem to equate men showing-off an act of gayness. Heh. We know how "tolerant" women are. We should be the ones dressing down. Sides, the only complaints I've ever had was from fat and/or pimply chicks. HAHAHAHA! Go figure. Short shorts all the way. I work-out so it's all good.

Michal Augustyniak said...

I meant homoPHobes, 'scuse the spelling mistake. Just woke-up and had two smokes and one coffee. Bad proportions.

I don't understand why a man shouldn't wear short shorts. Are there brave women out there, who could explain that? Why does a man need to cover up his thighs? Is it because a man's legs are hairy? Well, arms are hairy too. Is it because one sees so much muscles? Well, it's all natural that a man's leg is a man's leg and a woman's leg is a woman's leg. A sportive man looks much better in short shorts than in these ridiculous baggy sacs.

SeVill said...

I work hard on my legs and I like to show them off. I used to be told that I looked like an upside down triangle because my legs lagged so far behind my upper body. I have been on a quest ever since. Why is it okay for women to where short shorts where there is ass is pratically hanging out (not always a good thing) and a guy can not wear shorts that are at mid thigh. Do what you want to do? Some of the baggy shorts I see out in streets look like oversized capris.

Anonymous said...

I'm wearing shorts all the time in the summer now with a 4 inch inseam on all 3 pairs of shorts that I have. I'm a man myself, and NO I'm not a homosexual. And I feel good wearing them! Not only is there a double standard when it comes to what a man is allowed to wear in America, but it is foolish to judge and claim that the man must be "gay" just because he wears shorts above the knees. When you look at it, American women can wear anything they want, and it's perfectly ok. In fact, let's look at what American women do wear....jeans, short shorts, short short shorts, baggy shorts, cut off jeans, dresses, skirts, Scottish kilts, dress suits (many styled like men's suits) mens shirts and pants or whatever they feel like, etc. Let it be said that American women in general could be considered the biggest cross dressers on the planet.

A word of thought....does anyone know that skirts (originally) are really a man's garment? They go back thousands of years. Look at pictures of the ancient Roman soldiers for example. Even today the Scottish men still wear kilts.
The reason why skirts were men's garments through history is because they are a better way to ventilate the testicles, because the testicles are sensitive to heat especially in hot regions.

But then because of the major cattle and herding industry, men started wearing clothing that suited that kind of work. Dungarees (jeans) were designed for that purpose, and gradually mens skirt type clothing disappeared from early America. Literally speaking,
when women wear skirts, they are really wearing what used to be men's clothing!

Ever notice how big the clothing selection is for women in the front of the mall department stores? They are like 3 times bigger then the men's selection, which is usually at the rear of the store.

What ever happened to the cut off jeans and men's shorts of the 70's and 80's? Who changed this? Now all we men see are these stupid looking baggy (so called) shorts in the department stores that makes our legs look like bean poles sticking out of the bottom.
I'll wear my 4 inch Sportif short shorts this summer and continue the tradition of the 80's.....rather then look like a summer cartoon character of the 2000's.

question: so, what if a guy wears slightly fitted shorts that are only an inch above the knee with maybe some high top sneakers and a T, what do the ladies think about this?

Phil said...

Yeah, I'm a straight dude and I came from an era where shorts were ... short. To me, "short shorts" are something where you're about to see butt-cheek -- I'm not talking about that. But the shorts this dude is wearing look reasonable to me.

Even so, I HATE the down-to-the-knee short, and I simply can't find any that are not. So I wear cutoffs.

I used to wear pretty short cutoffs when I was younger and it was pretty normal back then. But I'm making my cutoffs a little longer now, like with a 5" or 6" inseam. I'm told my legs are nice, but more than that, they're just cooler. Those big baggy things trap hot air and just generally keep you too hot. It's summer! That's why I put shorts on! I hope this knee "short" thing goes out of style very, very soon.

I like to wear shorts rather than suits. Even I hate to go office, because of suits. The most important thing while wearing a shirt is, we have to maintain our legs clean.

it seems like many of the girls on here either want their man to be the typical american ideal (read boring) or want to emasculate them (read gay).
can't a straight guy just wear whatever he wants?

I wear very short shorts all the time. When its 110 plus out, shorts that are down to the knee are hot, sticky and uncomfortable. My shorts all have a 1 to 3 inch inseam. Some people giggle or make comments some compliment. The important thing is that I am comfortable and cool in my shorts. I get many that compliment me on my nice looking legs. Don't see amny other guys in short shorts. They don't know what comfort they are missing.

John said...

I love the shorter shorts on guys. I am not saying ball showing short, 3+ in inseam is fine. Do not want to scare the mommy with little kiddies. Trying to find a pair of shorter short is almost impossible unless you want running shorts, but they tend to curve around your anatomy and show more than most want to see. Nice cottony loose fitting shorts are nice though. When the shorts get to the knees you might as well where pants, imho.

Bill said...

I love my short shorts. Someone mentioned the 3 inch inseam and that's about right. They're more comfortable, they're cooler, and if you have good legs, all the better.

The problem as I see it is that men have let teenagers dictate style. The shorts on teens have gotten so long they're almost pedal pushers. They're not shorts anymore.

I wear them for me. I don't dress to make everybody else happy and I really don't care what others may think. That's their hang-up, not mine.

I've four or five pair I bought on line and I've got another couple of pair that I shortened from standard shorts. Eddie Bauer makes a pair of cargo shorts with a 7" inseam. I'ts fairly easy to shorten these to about 5 inches. You can't go much shorter than that or you lose the cargo pocket.

I am a male and I have quite fit body. I wear short (square cut) tight shorts. Every young woman follows me with her eyes and I often hear nice compliments about my legs and butt from them. Tell me why I should not wear these shorts if females appreciate them? And one more comment to those gay people with gaydar in search mode: This is not my problem that my butt, legs and perineum make you horny and turn your gaydar on. I have to dissappoint you all gay people -I am wearing such tight short shorts for ladies and they really appreciate it because I heard already plenty of compliments from them.

Anonymous said...

On the begining one comment to ladies who like men in baggy shorts. I am sure that if you did see me in my tight, square cut short shorts you would change your mind.

I think that if man in short shorts makes some man's gaydar on, that person with a gaydar has to be gay. I also think that baggy shorts are so popular because of fat people (and U.S. has plenty of fat people). These baggy shorts are like fatness truth protection plan againsnt ladies asking "Fred, why you do not wear these cute tight short shorts?". Well he does not want to say the truth like: "because my ass is fat" so he says "I am wearing baggy shorts because gay people wear tight short shorts.". I have to dissappoint these gay people with gaydar set in search mode in all directions -too bad for you, I am wearing these shorts for women so your gaydar goes on for nothing. Of course my short shorts are not like these on that photo. They are shorter (so called square cut) tight and athletic. I have quite fit body and I do not shave legs (natrally I do not have too much hair on my body (including legs) so I do not look like a chimp nor gorilla). If I had quite hairy legs I would probably wear longer and probably baggy shorts because I would not like to shave my legs.

I love wearing short shorts( I'm not gay) it's just lot cooler esp. here in hot & humid Hawaii. I always wear short running shorts with a 1" inseam, but overhere it's really common to see guys in short shorts. Sometimes at night since it's summer and still hot out, I will go to the grocery store in my very short running shorts less liner & underware "an let it all hang out" hehe. Of course, you have to have a Ok body to wear revealing clothing and be tolerated.

I agree with most of you, tanned and shaved legs go great with short shorts (short shorts are what I call regular shorts!)Girls/women love to see men and compliment them on their "short" shorts. All my regular shorts are of the 2" inseam variety, about 12 pair!! (bought in the females Juniors dept of stores!), but I DO have some near knee length jean shorts for doing construction work in... jerk off men think guys in short shorts are gay...how stupid !!!

Recently, I spoke with a woman in a neighboring town who knew me from where we both live. She knew me from seeing me mowing my grass in my "sexy short shorts"!! So there !!!

Go to internet and search on Billy Goat Shorts. Several places carry these shorts. They are great quality and come in several basic colors. I have three pair. They are fuller legs but short a little above the knee. i am senior citizen and have been wearing shorts since the Burmada shorts came out. I went thru the period of short short Tennis shorts. Wore them around the house and local area stores. Around Memphis during the Summer, men of all size shapes, and ages wear shorts, many semi short short. Who cares, we are at least comfy in this heat and humidity. There are some men and women that really should not wear shorts, a 300 lb friend wore them, and he looked quite awful. I am 71, and got my Billy Goats on now. I walk a lot, so guess I not too bad in these shorts. One guy who just parked in a no parking zone, said some comment as I passed him, but my comeback is my Wife wants me in them. and if i dont wear them I wont get ANY tonight. Good reason to wear them.OK thats my comment. God Bless, and keep those shorts on.

Why do we have to wear styles because a big corporation like Nike wants us to? Everyone wore their shorts short until Nike decided they would take over the world. Now we all dress like pro basketball players.
I wear anything and everything to break the mold and would strongly suggest it to everyone. This is our life, our world, lets do whatever we want to regardless of those that have been brainwashed to believe there are certain styles that must be accepted.

Hooray to "anonymous (1:30pm)" !!! I'm in complete agreement with you !! I do what I want, and wear what I want....forget what the big companies want us to wear !! I get the looks and attention I want from wearing my short shorts (and micro bikinis at the pool / beach, too !). I'm completely comfortable in that attire, uncomfortable / miserable in anything else ! I wish there was a giant blogspot in the sky where guys like us could voice our opinion to the world!! I'm 52, by the way....

Funny how prespectives change. I think that older men are more likely to wear shorts that are truly short as that is how we were raised. I'm 58 and wouldn't dream of wearing what kids today call shorts. They look like the koolots my mother and sister used to wear. Talk about being embarrassed to go out in public. I try to find shorts that have a 4-5" inseam which is not very easy to find. This ensures that my thighs, where most of the heat is generated, are uncovered. If the thighs are covered you might as well be wearing jeans.

bikini bob said...

If you can't find what you want in dept. stores, then search on-line. That's basically what I do. ALL my bikini "undies" & swimwear are bought on-line. I've found jeans on-line that I like way better than dept. store varieties. If you want jeans, shorts, and even office attire (suits) that fit the way YOU want them to(like I do) then I suggest going to "Makeyourownjeans.com" & "makeyourownsuits.com" (same site). They'll make shorts for you too, exactly how you want them !!

I have very muscular, shaved legs, and used to get comments all the time when wearing short running shorts. Today, even running shorts go below the knee. I've recently found some that I like, with the split up the side, that show my legs, are cool, and comfortable. I have gotten tons of comments on my legs over the years. I am so sick of having to wear non-running shorts that go to mid-calf and are so baggy and uncomfortable. Unfortunately, I cannot find what I call "normal" shorts, which now are considered "short shorts". These are no more comfortable than regular slacks, maybe less so. They don't even show my entire calf--what kind of shorts are these?

I am so sick of homophobic America--I'm surprised all the dudes that shave their legs didn't make some comment that people think they are "gay" for doing that as well. It seems if a man wants to look good, he's "gay". How absurd. If shaved legs didn't look good, rest assured women wouldn't shave theirs!

By the way, what happened to jean (denim) shorts--are those "gay", as well? The only ones I can find are cargo shorts, with about 12 pockets large enough to hold all my possessions, and so baggy I could get two of my 26" quads into each leg.

bikinibob said...

I totally agree with the above statement ! Thank-you sir ! Use the internet to find what you are looking for (Ebay, or use a "search engine"), or do something else I do, look in the womens/juniors dept and find the more "manly" styles. Hey, How many times have you seen WOMEN looking for clothes in the MEN'S section? Or even wearing MEN'S clothes/shoes? They're not all "dykes"! And we ALL know we're not "cross-dressing", or "fags"... just wearing the shorts we are most comfortable in! So who is going to copy all this and send it to Levi's and other jean shorts makers? THAT'S how things get done ! Speak up to those who MAKE the shorts! I'm not ashamed AT ALL to wear "short" shorts (or string bikinis either) because I love the way women look and talk to me in them! I just think anyone else is stupid !

Gregg said...

I find it interesting that females can wear tight shirts showing their boobs, or tight short shorts showing nice bunns or even a cameltoe and all is well. But, let a male wear shorts or even tight pants that even slightly make his maleness ("package") visible...... Well, he must be either gay or a pervert here in the U.S.. I grew up when shorts were shorts and the early version of "Speedos" and square cuts were the norm of the beaches, not the exception! The double standard sucks. Women can flaunt it, but men have to hide it! Maybe the pendulum will start swinging the other way soon.

I totally support short shorts, for 1) they're shorts they're supposed to be short
2) men have nice legs too, and regardless of whether they're hairy, shaven, tanned or pale we might want to show them off as well.

it's not an issue of homosexuality, (as if gay is a bad thing) it's a matter of climate, fashion and personal taste. I think it's a shame and sham that the american man is constantly restricted in his fashion options and it's free range for women to wear what they want even if it's unflattering

If a man has a pair beefy, proportional, well-built masculine legs, tight shorts would be a great complement, especially if the tight shorts are also short and revealing !

I wear, and enjoy wearing short shorts.

I live in a conservative area in N. Carolina, complete with uneducated rednecks.

Yes...I hear comments all the time, regarding my legs (smooth, tanned, and w/o sounding conceited, well defined), from the stupid scumbags, and I pay them no mind.
I consider the source.

In todays' society, you see some of these stupid kids with their cargo shorts falling off their ass. They view this as "cool" and "In style".

Little do these stupid kids know, that that's how homosexual convicts attract others for sex using this "In Style" approach.

For years I've seen plumbers exposing their hairy ass cracks. I would deem this as being more gay than those who wear short shorts.

Don't even get me started on the garb that is worn by Sumo Wrestlers...!

How about those long distance runners with their short shorts?

Let me say, that:
CARGO SHORTS are OVER-RATED, HOT, and downright SUCK!

I to have a pair of these and I rarely wear them due to the heat retention.

Mens testicles are supposed to recede when heated and retract when it is cold in order not to kill sperm cells under extreme conditions.
This is a MEDICAL FACT on how the body regulates itself.

Quite frankly, I don't give a damn what others think, being that they aren't going to pay my medical bills when I contract testicular cancer, or any other ailment, all because I felt compelled by a group of jerk offs to comply to their demands and dress like they do, and/or dress as they wish me to dress?!

When it comes to you morons and your idiotic, homophobic opinions/comments...
look away, and keep your conservative, childish comments to yourself.

My old man has taken to wearing short sold as women's because men's shorts are way too long inseam. His shorts are around 4 inches inseam. He's over 50 but still has good legs. I love it!

My wife wants me to be comfortable but she also wants to see my thighs, bless her heart. But short shorts for men are not easy to find in stores hereabouts.

So when we go shopping for shorts, we are both in the same aisle. I look for about 3 inch inseam, straight denim with no frills or flowers.

Come on, it's not about sexual orientation or whatever, it's about comfort and, I admit, pleasing my wife is also good.

I long for the day to come back when we can find more men's short shorts than these knee-length - or longer - jokes on the shelves.

For now, ladies' shorts are a good substitute. There's a problem with the length of the zip fly (it's way too short for ease of access when nature calls) but that's easily overcome.

Maybe wives have the right idea, as earlier posters indicated. My wife too encouraged me to get some of the ladies shorts from Walmart but now the season changed and there's not the same styles available that suit me (patterns etc. are too obviously feminine for me). So she got a pair of cycle shorts by Danskin. They still look unisex, but the fabric is snug and stretchy and shows the outline of my equipment. She thinks that's great and wants me to wear them when we go out, but only time will tell.

I think, like all fashions, if you have the body to make it look good, then it's cute. If I had the legs, I would definitely wear shorter shorts in the summer. And if I had the body and the guts, I'd wear some sexy kilts too :) What isn't cute is skinny guys wearing shorts long enough to be capri pants... they end up looking like they're wearing (ugly) skirts.

As for the childish comments about being gay, I acknowledge that there may be some correlation, but that's only because gay guys are freer with their fashion choices. Just because you're straight doesn't mean you have to dress like you're ashamed of your body, guys.

harry said...

I didn't know so many guys were frustrated about these knee length "shorts", thought I was alone.
So I read what some said before and thought I'd go take a look. I found no men's short shorts outside of underwear with gaping gaps, so looked at the ladies' wear. In the middle of all the pink glittery and flowery short shorts, there were some denim shorts that would have been OK if they were big enough in the waist, but the downside was that the inseam was almost nonexistent, less than half an inch which is short enough for all the boys to hang out. Eventually I found the Danskin bike pants for ladies, they are fairly short with a 3.5 inch inseam but mostly they are gently snug (not cramping) and if you are into it, show off your three buddies to good benefit.

Koddos to all the men who are confident enough to know they look good in short shorts and to the women who appreciate the male body (those who don't are apparently lesbos).

Shopping in the Women's/junior's is an answer to the bad men's fashion available today. The nice thing about juniors low rise pants is they fit a man's waste and young girls haven't really developed hips yet so they fit pretty good.

One comment though. As others have mentioned, women can wear anything, whether it looks feminine or not. So, as guys are shopping in the women's section, why should they have to limit themselves to the items that only look masculine. Heck, if a woman can wear a suit and tie with lace up oxford shoes without worrying about people thinking they a lesbo, men should be able to wear pink shorts shorts with flowers on them.

@PCDiem: If we're going to wish for cultural norms to change, we might as well address the problem. If homosexuality wasn't such an issue, as the least of the benefits, we wouldn't have to change people's conceptions of what looks gay. No one would care, the way it should be.

All the women who've posted here about guys wearing short shorts looking gay, and therefore not cute, would (in addition to dropping the connection b/w short shorts and gayness) know that gay does not mean not cute. Just because there's no hypothetical way you can have a guy doesn't mean he's not cute. Lots of guys they think are cute (movie stars, etc) are inaccessible, but they enjoy their beauty anyway.

I have returned to this blog and found even more comments I agree with...
I appreciate the tips to visit the websites Billy Goat shorts, and makeyourown pants, which I will visit very soon..
Lately, I just cut a set of new sweatpants to make my shorts, because that lets me save the pocket and lets me decide the length, which is usually the same length from the 80's..
Is there a way to post a picture on this blog, because if anyone wanted to see my legs in short-shorts I would post my picture in short-shorts for everyone to see, and I am 50...
I get TONS of great compliments from many women.
I agree that women have the run of the fashion world these days...and guys, we get dictated to by Nike and the silly rules put on us from society...I agree with everone who wishes for the days of short-shorts for guys to return...

First, I am not gay. In fact I am married to a beautiful woman and have 3 children.

Second. I love clothes and fashion. I wear purple, pink, yellow.. and I ware short shorts all summer. I my wife loves it.. she just told me that I looked nice in my Beneton purple/white striped shirt and purple 2" hem shorts.

I live in the mid-west and it is hard to me a man with any fashion out here. They all ware blue jeans and gray shirts.. maybe red sometimes (local sports team color).. so I really stand out.. but I don't care.

It is women like this writer that hold the whole of American men btack from fashion. I would not do this to you.. why do you have such a closed mind toward men's fashion?

I have travelled all over the world and have seen all kinds of fashions for men and women. As one poster already commented, the Europeans are far more open.

I buy most of may clothes from Sweden, England, France and Italy..they understand that a man can look good too.

Open up your perspective. A trim man can look good in skinny jeans or shorts.

Wake up American women and stop restricting what we can wear..instead demand that your men stay trim and fit so they look good. We do it to you. basically, the fashion that women "approve of" in this country is stuff that covers beer bellys, hides fatty legs, flabby arms.. I don'yt have that stuff to hide and I don't like wearing "bags" for clothes.

PCDiem said...

Jim, why should women demand that "men stay trim and fit so they look good"? You say "We do it to you", but I don't believe we do.

Look around! I see women with "fatty legs", "flabby arms" and yes, even "beer bellys" wearing short shorts, crop tops, tanks tops, you name it. We seem to accept women bearing any amount of skin even if they are far from "trim and fit".

Hi, it's so nice to see that other regular straight men like to wear short shorts also. I work out very hard in the gym to be in the best shape I can, and it's fun to show off my muscular legs wearing short shorts. I wear the really short Daisy Duke style low rise with a 2 inch inseam and just enough material to cover my butt. I am tired of the double standard that women get to show off everything and men are stuck wearing what Walmart sells in the mens department. I refuse to be put in the fashon box that men have been placed into, I wear my short shorts with pride. I do get laughed alot but it's usually by punk kids or rednecks so I just consider the source. I get smiles and nodds of approval from most of the older women "30s and up". The younger ones laugh but if it's a group of girls I get cat called so I just smile and smack my butt when I walk by and that sends them over the edge. LOL Hopefully short shorts will come back into style for men one day but if not I will continue to be the Lone Ranger in my town for wearing short shorts.

I'm a middle aged guy that grew up in a time when guys wore short shorts. I never liked to wear my shorts that short but don't like the long and baggy look of today. I prefer mid length shorts.

I think our society is full of WAY TOO MANY SHEOPLE who live in the grey area so they themselves never come under scrutiny or the target of someone else's critisism.

If someone is GENUINELY an up-standing person who loves themself and cares about their own well being... they will do what makes THEM comfortable and not put to much stock in what others think or say.

Personally, I'm forty three years old, have the body of an early thirty-something, and love to wear short shorts, tight jeans, flattering shirts, etc. And yes, I get compliments and looks of approval from my long time girl friend, other women, and the garden variety gay man who stares. Yes, Im secure enough with myself and my own sexuality that all of it just rolls off my back without a second thought. I am comfortable and thats what matters.

it seems to me a lot of these posts are from girls telling men not to wear short shorts. i see tons of fat, pasty women with horrible legs squeezing themselves into yoga pants and spandex shorts daily. it looks horrible but for some reason it is socially acceptable. yet when a man has fit, nice looking legs and wears mid thigh shorts, it's shunned....doesn't make sense.

the rule is simple people: guy or girl, if you have nice legs you can most likely pull of wearing short shorts

Ya gotta love the small and narrow mind of the average heterosexual woman these days.

Im most likely older than the average poster on this thread. Not only am I in better shape than the average American, but Im 12 times more secure with my sexuality, what my body looks likes, and I couldnt care less about who thinks what about whom. Male or female, straight or gay, old or young, black white or purple... if you are in shape and secure with yourself... do what makes YOU happy and what makes you feel comfortable. The gay fashion designers in New York and all the brainless people in the world who follow their every burp, fart and hickup DONT run the world.

Wow, I didn't realize this was such a hot topic. The thread has been going on for 4 years!

I'm a straight male, married for 22 years and 52 years old. I wear "short" shorts. I just consider them to be shorts though. I am not overweight and my legs are tan, smooth and firm. They are naturally hairless and look awesome in shorts, if I do say so myself.

I recently got really bothered by the double standard out there and decided to push the envelope. Today if you let your eyes go down my legs to my feet you will find toes with rings (3) and a French manicure. I think they look great and love the stares and occasional upset.

My husband is 53, straight and has great legs and looks better in shorts than most woman. He wears cloths that accentuate the positive and the womans jeans and shorts fit much better than mens. I can not stand to see men in shorts that appear 5 sizes too big, can not see the butt and they come down to the calves.....Yuck. My husband looks great and I am proud of him....Short shorts rule !!!! Lucky Lady in the south !!

I am married, and I love to shave my legs and else where. My wief also likes the way I look. So as long as she likes that I shave and where short shorts and other short pants it doesn't matter what others think. I love short shorts, there is nothing wrong in wareing them, except those narrow minded individuals who still live with their head burried in the ground. Men wore real short pants before woman copied, now if a guy ware real short pants ,like short shorts according to their Gaydar oll of us have to be gay, not so, I am not gay, anyway who cares any more, so what if I was gay, get a lif and get with the program. I ahte those ugly, long, baggy shorts they are selling today. I wouldn't be cought dead in them. I really love showing off my legs they are in great condition for a 51 year old guy. I still go to the gym to exercise and keep my weight down, and my wife love the way I look. So lets get reid of those ugly shorts and get what most of the guys want to ware, others will follow later.

i am a 48 year old male who is married and not gay!!! but i really love wearing denim short shorts especially during the summer months. problem is, is that alot of very prudish, stuck up people live in the little town that i live in and i know that they all giggle and talk and gossip whenever they see me out on the streets wearing short shorts 2 inches or less inseam. just a couple of days ago someone even called the cops on me cause someone complained that i was wearing really short denim short shorts. granted the cops just told me to go home and to wear something a bit more sensible, so how come the cops don't stop all the girls wearing short shorts too and tell them to cover up??? that person who called the cops on me just must have had nothing to do and was bored, american society is just so unbelievably screwed up and so double standard it just makes me sick. prudish, snobish, stuck up narrow minded people just makes me sick!!! since when did it become against the law for a man to wear what he wants to and not women??

Chef David said...

The problem with men wearing short shorts is not a "men" thing, or a "gay" thing... it's all based on the fact that 98% of our society are sheople and find safety in numbers in staying in the gray/norm/middle of the road areas on ANY ISSUE. GOD FORBID any step out of line and say/do/wear/act on anything controversial.

I am a 43 year old straight caucasion male who most think I am in my early 30's. I wear short shorts and couldnt care less what others think. Im in good shape and I look good and Im not ashamed of that fact.

Side note... WOMEN (not girls or chicks or teeny boppers) dont seem to mind it a bit.

lee said...

shorts were made originally for men.all shorts of new designs should be made available for men before women versions come up,due only to avocations of equality.its idiocy to be making shorts for women with no male version of the types.worse to make shorts so short for women but so long for men,as it goes in complete reverse to all decency codes.women have skirts we dont wear,so why should they hijack our shorts fashion?why should we let them?
we should be allowed to wear shortpants suit to work if we can pull off the look,at least for those who are below 30 years of age and not in managearial positions, for a start.since some of women work dress dont even reach past the knees or have sleeves, and look somewhat plain, soft, semicasual

the intended meaning of gay when commenting on someone's drssing is that it is overly attention attrating, which means it can be used on person of either sex.yet i think the one who came up with such a use intended for it to be abused too,as it gets confused with male homosexuality, which is ridiculously beyond stupid.this also vindicates girls who shamelessly flaunt short shorts.the number of wrong minded people is alarming, the world is taking a turn for the worse.feminists are also not helping, only fighting for more privileges for women rather than teaching their kind proper etiquette,or pushing for freedom of dress for ALL,particularly addressing the double standards against males.

lee said...

i wished the definition of gay had remained as happy, rather than being used to refer to homosexual, then to refer to gaudy dressing, then using the second definition to confuse that of the third into a tool for discrimination and misleading of society.

lee said...

sean, next time call the cops on those sluts who wear short shorts, and if he doesnt arrest them, ask him why he forbade u to do so.ask him if it even made any sense,in terms of equality, decency n freedom.since when must men cover up more than women?and since when have women hogged shorts supposed to be a man's clothing?idiots.
i wish the law in my city would arrest those girls who dress cheebaeciously(thats my word to describe those).the boys in my city are all cowards and so few actually wear short shorts to do them justice.theyre all spoiling the standards.giving rise to a wrong minded stallholder who claimed 'singapore is different' and only girls wear short shorts.trying to comment my white fbt as being abit gay.i hammered into him the truth of decency logic and said he's ridiculous to think girls have the right to expose instead of boys.i mean, who bothers the police the most over molest cases?

lee said...

i recall the slutwalk starting because of a policeman telling a woman on her dressing.those women claim they arent promoting indecency or calling themselves sluts, just insisting on what they wish to wear.i think men in america should start a gaywalk.like slutwalk,it doesnt mean u are calling urselves gay,it just means u want the right to wear what u wish without idiotic prejudice.why can women assert their rights but not men?
sean, tell that policeman he n whoever who made the call that they are infringing on ur human rights.what do the women rights group say to this?its they who claim men have all the rights so they dont need a men group.yet when this happens they are all but silent.useless hypocrites.

boazrg said...

Right on the money. Americans are homophobic and childish ahout stuff like men wearing shorts that are too short. It's only recently that ghetto styles have made pants past one's knees passable as shorts. For men who are not tall, and I'm not, wearing shorts with a length past your knees makes you look like a little wearing his father's pants

lee said...

if short shorts be banned,it should be banned for women first n foremost.women shouldnt even be wearing those, its unnatural n gross.its a freakish world out there, seeing an overwhelmingly more women than men in short shorts,n thats not counting those in short skirts.women should never go out in shorts when dating a guy who bothers putting on long pants, yet i still see so many of those, but hardly any of the vice versa.boys have more right to be in shorts than girls by right, thats my final line;just like girls have a right to wear skirts but not boys.

I don't care if ladies think it looks "gay" your opinion is noted and ignored filed under absurd stupidity.

for the pea brains out there I will explain this, the only way to look "gay" is to be engaged in carnal acts with men. If you want men to obey every Ludicrous trend and not enjoy bending the rules just a little bit enjoy the tool or the loneliness you wish to be in.

Gay??? Clothes??? How freaking retarded.

That this is seen as meriting discussion or debate is sad. Anyone should feel free to wear anything they wish. Gender is as arbitrary as race and clothing has nothing to do with sexual orientation (and homophobes/transphobes: piss off).

It's been pointed out already that twenty years ago men in the US normally wore what are now considered short-shorts. Men in most other countries in the world still wear what Americans commonly consider short-shorts.

If you don't like the look, that's cool, but if you're too insecure about your sexuality to wear shorts cut above the knee or you feel the need to ridicule those who do because of your homophobia, the world could do without you. The same goes for skinny or slim fit jeans, which were brought up here, as well.

I couldn't possibly count how many times I've been called a faggot (usually by a jock or a redneck from a moving vehicle) for wearing shorts or jeans shorter or slimmer than is currently regarded as acceptable by straight culture.

Sqweegee said...

Sexual orientation is not necessarily worn on the sleeve, or on the pant leg in this matter. Gay men come in all styles anyway. Men have been scared into covering up their legs either for fear of being discriminated against in the way gay and bi men are or for fear of being seen as attractive to another man, god forbid!

As a women I feel social pressure to wear short shorts to be accepted as an attractive woman, but I am very self conscious of my legs and feel more confident in shorts that cut a couple inches above the knee (also my thighs rub together and chafe, like many womens do).

I think men's thighs can be very sexy, regardless of whether they're hairy or tan, and if a straight man wants to wear short shorts, he should have that freedom as I would like the freedom to wear longer shorts, and not be discriminated against in the way that boyish lesbians are.

Also, a person's right to wear short shorts shouldn't be determined by how sexy a person's legs are.

People should just wear what they want and fight homophobia and poor body image.
