Marvin Gaye, NIKE, U.S. Men's Basketball Team Ad..

I know I haven't mentioned the Olympics in Berlin since my post on Team America wearing Ralph Lauren, but I've been watching it enough. Enough to know that Michael Phelps couldn't be stopped!  That and the female gymnasts from China did look a little young.

Anyhoo, peep the Nike ad below with Marvin Gaye singing the National Anthem, looking and sounding cooler than everybody, along with the U.S. Basketball Team (The "Redeem Team").  Nice.  Marvin Gaye is certainly in the category of being taken away from us way too soon...

More on the legendary Marvin Gaye here.

  1. That national anthem remix was kinda cool!
    Phelps is phenomenal!
And there's no way in hell those chinese gymnasts were 16 or older.

  2. I just saw the commercial featuring Marvin Gaye, among a backdrop of Team USA basketball players. I find it appalling that the National Anthem is reduced to a trip-hop back beat to sell gear to ballers.

Do you not know what the National Anthem stands for? Don’t try to tell me that the patriotism angle lies within the Olympic umbrella. The bastardization of our country’s national anthem is merely a continuation of what pop ‘vocalists’ feel is within their rights as - and I’m laughing as I type this - artists.

A national anthem is a generally patriotic musical composition that evokes and eulogizes the history, traditions and struggles of its people, recognized either by a nation’s government as the official national song, or by convention through use by the people. Not a soundtrack to a commercial.

PLEASE leave the National Anthem alone! If you’ve ever been on a Marine or Navy base when Colors blast at 0800, you MIGHT understand what the song truly stands for.

Then again, maybe not. And that’s the sad part. And those who don’t, will undoubtedly vote for the GlobalHomoSocialist this November.

  3. OMG Doon, you are sooo over the top! And undoubtedly a rabid right wing ULTRA conservative.

Calm down already, it's a cool PATRIOTIC commercial and Marvin Gaye is awesome in it. And it would be a waste of time trying to convince me otherwise, so let's agree to disagree on this one... Thanks for visiting Hip Candy, and tell Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Bill-O and whomever else tells you how to think, that I said hello.

And YES WE CAN and we certainly will in November. Thank you very much.

  4. Did you know that the national anthem melody was originally taken from a popular drinking song? Everything's a remix Doon.
