And the WINNER IS...

The first to send in a complete contest entry and Hip Candy's youngest winner to date!

I would love this little black dress, it is a staple in anyone's wardrobe! I would wear this beauty with a single diamond drop so i don't take away from the dress. I would wear some simple silver bangles on my arm and nude pumps. My hair would be in loosely tousled waves and i would have a dramatic silvery smokey eye with nude glossed lips. To add a touch of color i might use a deep plum blush on my higher cheekbones lightly. It would be such a simple but sophisticated look. ~Jenn Lam

2010 BET Awards: The Good & The Blah.

I have to admit, the 2010 BET Awards were some of their best work yet. I know. Shocking. But the show was actually pretty good for the most part. Some of the most notable performances for me was Monica singing her song "Everything To Me" which has seriously grown on me because I didn't even like the song at first. And Monica's vocals get stronger everytime I hear her sing. She's definitely a talent. Even if her fashion sense is a little out there. Click READ MORE HERE for more pics and commentary below:

2010 BET Awards: Chris Brown's Controversial MJ Tribute...

Chris Brown did a tribute to Michael Jackson on the one year anniversary of his death during the 2010 BET Awards, and I must say, dude did a good job IMHO. Michael Jackson's Estate is Making Mega Money...

The money is rolling in. The bills are being paid. And all those people who said Michael Jackson might earn more in death than in life are being proved right. Like the estates of Elvis Presley and Yves Saint Laurent, Jackson's has grown immensely since he died on June 25, 2009.

Without Jackson's lavish spending sprees, and with the help of new revenue pouring in from nostalgia over the reign of the King of Pop, estate co-executors John Branca and John McClain have dramatically turned around Jackson's finances.

Venus Williams Tina Turner Inspired Tennis Dress: Not Bad.

Venus Williams in action during her first round match against Rossana De Los Rios of Paraguayon Day One of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on June 21, 2010 in London, England. She recently said in an interview that she would be channeling Tina Turner with her clothing choices at Wimbledon. And I have to say, this look is toned down compared to what she's been wearing on the court lately. She's definitely having fun with her tennis gear.

Venus Williams to Channel Tina Turner at Wimbledon...

Venus Williams incited a minor international debate with her slightly bordello-ish lace outfit at the French Open a few weeks back. But if you thought that was… well, whatever you thought that was, the unfazed fashion plate promises you ain’t seen nothing yet. “I know that the French Open outfit look caused a stir, but I think the one I will wear in the next couple days will be better yet—it’s all about lace and fringes, a lot of fringes. I’m thinking about Tina Turner here. I am not sure how that is going to go over, but at least I can say that it will catch everyone’s attention.”

Full Figured Fashion Week Founder Speaks Her Mind [VIDEO]

via HuffPo: This year's Full Figured Fashion Week is under way, bridging the gap between plus-size consumers, designers and retailers. According to founder Gwen DeVoe, plus-size customers spend a collective $25 billion dollars on apparel each year. She thinks the fashion industry has made some progress on the full-figure front, but has some way to go. DeVoe also had some harsh words for Julien Macdonald, a judge on "Britain's Next Top Model," who recently called plus-size models a joke.

Hip Candy Appreciates Infolinks...

Hip Candy is approaching it's 4th anniversary as a blog (on June 20th!) and across these 4 years, we've been affiliated with some pretty sweet partnerships, Infolinks being one of them. Infolinks is pretty new to Hip Candy, but it's value to this blog is just as important and valuable as the rest. My fondest memory of my partnership with Infolinks has to be of my very first check that came from them. And what a pleasant surprise that first check was! No really! Especially IN THIS ECONOMY. OMG, I was close to being down to my LAST when I got an email from Infolinks letting me know that I had funds available. HALLELUJAH! That email was like seeing a spring of cool, refreshing ice water after walking all day, parched, in a hot, dry desert. Real talk. Blog partnerships are invaluable if you're blogging as a career, that being said, I'm so glad to be partnered up with Infolinks.

Now for the fun part (yay!) Just to show folks what a great company Infolinks is, they wanted to do something to make their partners happy. Like REAL happy. My first thought was like, shoooooot. You want ME to tell you what I WANT? Like what I REALLY want? You sure about that? LOL. Because I can really go IN right now. But truthfully, if I'm really honest with myself, what I would really want would be the opportunity to prove myself as a dress designer, and if someone could help me with making that happen, that would truly be a dream. My background is in fashion design, graduating with a degree back in 1999 from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles. I'm a Louisiana native, and I moved back home shortly after getting my fashion degree. I think people are pretty aware that Louisiana is not exactly one of the fashion capitals. But I've tried to make it work and keep myself in the fashion loop by blogging about fashion and style for the last few years and honestly speaking, it has created some great opportunities. I was able to attend and cover Fashion Week in both New York and Los Angeles for the blog as well as cover designer faucets for a Kitchen and Bath Show in Las Vegas. I recently started sewing again making handmade dresses for resale in my Etsy Store. But if I had all the startup cash I needed, clothing manufacturers at the ready, a knowledgeable fashion industry insider mentor to guide me, a connected PR team that could get the next A-List starlet AND Michelle Obama to wear my dresses, I'm telling you, that's all the kick-start I would need to launch the most fabulous collection of cute dresses the world has seen in a good Louisiana minute! If I had the money I needed to do all that? That would truly be a dream come true.

REPORT: Beyonce is Over "Single Ladies"

According to ShowbizSpy Beyonce is truly flattered by the HUGE response that the song "Single Ladies" has gotten since it's release, but at the same time, she's kinda... over it. ShowbizSpy is also reporting that she no longer wants to be a part of a "long term joke" which seems a little harsh to me if she actually said that. But at the same time, this song has been done and redone by countless children, men, drag queens, groups, even other pop stars (Justin Timberlake, Nick Jonas) and film legends alike (Liza Minnelli in SATC2). I do recall Beyonce doing interviews back during her Destiny's Child days and saying that she had gotten tired of the song and the word "Bootylicious" after that song went viral, so who knows, there could be some truth to this too. In the words of her husband Jay Z, she's off that.

Designer Cynthia Rowley Shows Her Resort Line Curbside...

Amy Odell from The Cut caught up with Cynthia Rowley's 2011 Resort collection, which the designer drove around to magazine offices instead of putting on a sit-down show or hosting a presentation. Rowley explained, "Everyone's schedules are so busy and it's hard enough to go twice a year to shows. I just thought it would be easier to bring them out...bring the girls to the editors." Vogue editor Anne Vincent attested, "Cynthia really couldn't have gotten her resort collection any closer to our office today." Along with the editors, the Times Square passersby seemed to be enjoying the ensembles.

Starbucks to Offer FREE Wifi Starting July 2010...

Well, it's about time...

via CNN:
Starting July 1, Starbucks will offer free Wi-Fi nationwide, with no registration or account required. Even better, Wi-Fi will not be time limited.
Starbucks joins an increasing list of brands and chains to offer free Wi-Fi in its stores. For example, last December, McDonald's rolled out free Wi-Fi to nearly all of its restaurants across the country. Panera Bread also offers a similar program.

McDonald's and Starbucks both have partnerships with AT&T, which, while often criticized for the quality of its wireless data network, is one of the largest Wi-Fi hotspot providers in the United States.

Starbucks was one of the first chains to offer Wi-Fi access to its patrons, first via an agreement with T-Mobile and then with AT&T. Starbucks visitors have been able to enjoy up to two hours of free Wi-Fi from their favorite coffee house, provided they are either an AT&T customer or they use a Starbucks Card to login.
The new program will do away with any sort of registration, which will make those of us who always forget either our AT&T account information or can't find our Starbucks cards extremely happy. Continue reading this article HERE.

RIP Jimmy Dean.

In 1969, Jimmy Dean and his brother started Jimmy Dean Sausage. Jimmy sold Jimmy Dean to Sara Lee in the 80s, but he stayed on as the spokesperson of the company until he was let go because of his age in 2004. Growing up in the South, Jimmy Dean was pretty much a staple for us for breakfast. We even mix it in with ground beef to make delicious hamburgers. A true food icon has passed...

Denzel Washington & Viola Davis Win Tony's for "Fences"

Viola Davis, winner of the Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Play award for her work in "Fences" and Denzel Washington, winner of the award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for his work, also in "Fences," posed at the American Theatre Wing's 64th annual Tony Awards ceremony in New York, June 13, 2010.

"Fences," a revival of August Wilson's deeply personal drama about family, won for best revival of a play. Its two stars, Washington and Viola Davis, won for best actors in a play. Even their acceptance speeches seemed to complement each other.

"My mother always says, `Man gives the award, God gives the reward.' I guess I got both tonight," Denzel Washington said after winning for his performance as the sanitation man who might have been a baseball star.

"I don't believe in luck or happenstance. I absolutely believe in the presence of God in my life," said Viola Davis, honored for playing Washington's all-sacrificing wife. "It feels like such a divine experience eight times a week." Congratulations to both of them. See a complete list of 2010 Tony Winners HERE.

Will Halle Berry Appear on VOGUE'S September Issue Cover?

That's the rumor...

via Jezebel:
Vogue has faced a lot of criticism in recent years for its whitewashed covers and editorial pages. While Anna Wintour's magazine — perhaps in response — started occasionally booking models like Chanel Iman and Jourdan Dunn, covers are another story: When Jennifer Hudson made the cover in 2007, she was the first black woman to do so since Berry, in 2002 Liya Kebede, in 2005. Michelle Obama and BeyoncĂ© followed one another on the March and April, 2009, issues, respectively, but in 2008, there was merely also that unfortunate LeBron James cover. Vogue's first -ever black cover model was Beverly Johnson, who did the honors in September, 1974.

Like Candy Pratts-Price says in The September Issue, "September is the January of fashion." The September issue of any fashion magazine is typically a best-seller, crammed as it is with the new fall clothes (and so many $3,000 new fall handbags). If this rumor proves correct — and it might not be, given that there were reports that Gwyneth Paltrow would get the September cover after she shot with Mario Testino last week — it would be the first time a black woman was chosen to front a September issue of Vogue since Johnson's own cover Naomi Campbell's September, 1989, cover, at least as far as I was able to determine. That would be a significant vote of confidence in Halle Berry's newsstand appeal from an unlikely source.

Or perhaps Anna Wintour just wants to prove that she can make a beautiful black actress look just as second-rate as she can any Jessica Biel or Blake Lively out there.

Jada Pinkett Smith Covers Essence Mag's July 2010 Issue..

"When I walked out there and disrobed, I felt like a queen. I felt like the world was mine. Like there was this power just emanating from my person. Like there was nothing I couldn't do."

She bares it all for the July cover of ESSENCE magazine, and makes a bold statement to empower Black women and girls. Bethenny Frankel May Leave The Real Housewives of NY...

via Famecrawler:
Bethenny Frankel has a new baby, a new marriage, a new book in the works and her very own show called ”Bethenny Getting Married.” There have been rumors before that she is waving goodbye to the The Real Housewives of New York and why wouldn’t she? All the drama seems unnecessary.

When asked if she would be staying on RHONY during a press call for her new show, Bethenny stated: “I don’t know, I really don’t know. If I were in a lesser role maybe, or if I was in it not that much. But really, it’s enough. What else is there to do? It’s the top of the party and I may as well leave. The only reason I would do it would be just to comment. It got heightened this season and my show is so refreshing compared to that.”

Her new show will focus on Bethenny as she prepares for her wedding while pregnant and the birth of her baby Bryn. The show premieres Thursday, June 10 at 10PM on Bravo.

Will you watch? Will you be sad to see her leave Real Housewives?

Sex & the City is Not Ruling Out a Third Movie.

via HuffPo:

Hurt by withering reviews and perhaps some bad timing, "Sex and the City 2" – despite its pedigree – came in third place on its opening weekend, grossing less money over five days than the original made in three.

But looking toward a summer dominated by testosterone-fueled films, Warner Bros. is hoping the sequel has legs as long as Carrie and her fashionista friends. And depending on those legs, the studio is not ruling out a third go at it.

Dan Fellman, the studio's head of distribution, acknowledged that many of the women the film targets may have had other plans over Memorial Day weekend. But he also figures his is the only female-driven movie over the next few weeks of summer.

Are Men Buying Spanx? In a Word... Yes.

via the NYTimes:

Spanx for Men has been a huge retail hit. “We are selling them as quickly as Spanx can make them,” said Nickelson Wooster, the men’s fashion director at Neiman Marcus, which was until recently the only department store carrying them. (This month Spanx for Men arrived in Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom, and at Web sites like freshpair.com.) “Men may not be talking about it, but they’re buying it.”

Men’s “shapewear” is “the next big thing,” declared Michael Kleinmann, the president of Freshpair, which sells underwear to both sexes. Already, compression garments from brands like Equmen and Sculptees, to name two, have been selling briskly.

Kelly Clarkson & Chris Daughtry Cover "Fast Car" Nice.

Former American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson (season 1 winner) and Chris Daughtry (season 5, Taylor Hicks won that season) performed an acoustic duet of Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car during a Daughtry concert Sunday night, May 30, at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. I definitely co-sign this. They both sounded great covering this song.
